About us

About us

tallysquare publishes roof cost estimates and plain-language guides for homeowners and property managers trying to work out what a roofing job should actually cost.

What this site is

A free roof cost calculator, plus articles explaining what drives the price — materials, tear-off, pitch, access, permits — and what to look for on a contractor's estimate.

The goal is narrow. We want you to walk into a conversation with a roofer already knowing roughly what the number should be, and which line items are worth asking about.

Articles are published under the Tallysquare Editorial byline rather than under individual names.

Where the numbers come from

Our cost figures are compiled from published industry cost data, manufacturer price lists, and state and municipal permit fee schedules. Ranges are then adjusted for state labor costs, roof pitch, and material type.

Every estimate is a range, never a single number. Real quotes vary with access, decking condition, and local demand, and any tool that gives you one confident figure is overselling what it knows. We show the breakdown — materials, labor, tear-off, extras — so you can see what is driving the total.

The cost data carries a visible "last updated" date and is reviewed quarterly.

What we are not

We are not roofing contractors, insurance adjusters, or licensed trade professionals. Nothing on this site is professional, legal, or financial advice.

We publish research and cost estimates. A quote from a licensed contractor who has physically been on your roof will always beat any calculator, including ours. Treat our numbers as a starting point for the conversation, not a replacement for it.

For insurance questions, your policy documents and your insurer are the authority. If a claim is disputed, consider speaking with a licensed public adjuster in your state.

How this site makes money

tallysquare is free to read. We earn revenue from advertising displayed on the site, and we may earn a commission when readers request quotes through partner services.

This never changes our estimates. The calculator runs the same math either way, and we do not accept payment from contractors in exchange for coverage or placement in our guides.

Corrections

Roofing prices move, and we would rather be corrected than wrong. If a figure here looks off — especially if you work in the trade — email support@tallysquare.com and we will check it.
